Ground-breaking ceremony for start of General Motors order

Annual volume of sales amounting to 250 million Euros – Start of project in 2003

Nürnberg/Stryj (Ukraine). LEONI AG, Nuremberg/Germany, last week started in the Ukranian town of Stryj, in the vicinity of L’Viv, a project for General Motors which will ensure the long-term growth of the wiring and cable systems specialist. With the turning of the sod for the wiring systems production site, the implementation stage of the bulk order, which was gained in 2001, has started. The order will amount to a total volume of 1.2 billion Euros by the year 2010. LEONI plans to start the wiring systems production for the Opel models Astra and Zafira in 2003 and expects to achieve an annual sales volume of 250 million Euros through full use to capacity from 2005 onwards.
The ground-breaking ceremony was attended by the Ukranian secretary of state for trade and industry/European integration, Mr. Olexandr Schlapak, the chairman of the national territory administration L’Viv, governor Mychajlo Gladij, the LEONI chairman of the board of directors, Mr. Ernst Thoma, the LEONI board member responsible for the Wiring Systems Division, Mr. Uwe H. Lamann, together with a number of representatives from both politics and industry.

LEONI to continue strategy of cost leadership
“With our new plant in the Ukraine, we consistently pursue our strategy of cost leadership with which we will achieve significant competition advantages by means of a favourable cost structure and an intelligent logistics concept“, emphasizes Ernst Thoma, LEONI AG chairman of the board. In this project, which amounts to more than 40 million Euros in investment, LEONI profits from its experience in setting up international production sites according to its globally standardised production system (LPS), Thoma states. Starting 2005, the new plant is expected to give employment to a staff of about 4,000.

Wiring Systems contribute 51 % share to overall turnover
The Wiring Systems Division contributes with a share of more than 50 % the biggest part to the LEONI AG overall turnover. The LEONI group achieved a turnover of approximately 1.1 billion Euros in the financial year 2001 (2000: 962 million Euros) and gained a profit for the year of 28 million Euros (2000: 22.3 million Euros). Major customers for LEONI cable harnesses and wiring systems, designed and produced according to customer specification, include Daimler Chrysler, Audi/VW, General Motors, Porsche, Rover, Land Rover as well as numerous manufacturers of commercial vehicles.
