Nürnberg/Friesoythe – LEONI Special Cables Friesoythe GmbH &Co. KG, a subsidiary of LEONI Kabel GmbH & Co. KG, has been awarded a contract by Siemens AG for the supply of telecommunication cable assemblies for expanding future-oriented ADSL connections provided by Deutsche Telekom and other network operators. The volume of the three-year contract exceeds more than DM 100 million. The company has also signed a follow-up contract with Siemens AG for the supply of telecommunication cable assemblies for digital switching system exchanges. This contract will also cover a three-year term and will also involve sales in excess of more than DM 100 million.

ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) is a new transmission technology that permits data transmission 12 times as fast as conventional ISDN technology. ADSL transfers data from the Internet to the user`s PC at speeds up to 768 kilobits per second. By the end of 2000, Deutsche Telekom intends to provide ADSL connections in 600 local exchanges in Germany under the family brand T-DSL. LEONI is working flat out to supply the required special cables quickly.

ADSL networks represent a new application for LEONI specialcables. In contrast, the follow-up contract is for cable assemblies that have long been used in digital switching systems. Siemens markets these to telecommunication providers throughout the world. A digital switching system connects the caller to the desired party electronically and provides the technological basis for telephone, fax, and Internet communication.
