Leoni planning the “factory of the future” in Roth

Management, IG Metall trade union, works council and City of Roth acting in concert

Roth/Nuremberg – The wire, cable and wiring systems specialist Leoni will extend and update the production capacity of its facility in Roth near Nuremberg. The long-established Company intends to fundamentally restructure its main plant. Leoni is making a clear commitment to this Franconian location and laying the foundations for further growth with its “factory of the future”. This will safeguard existing jobs. The employees at the plant are making a key contribution to the project.

The rich-in-tradition production facility at Stieberstrasse in Roth does not provide any space for further growth as it is restricted by the street, the river Rednitz and the industrial canal. Furthermore, the dense development of the site constricts logistical options for delivery, further processing and dispatch of the cable products. Leoni has therefore decided to build a “factory of the future” that will provide additional production capacity, efficient processes and also modern jobs.

“In the future, too, Leoni will be committed to Roth as an important location for its cable production,” says Dr Klaus Probst, President and CEO of Leoni AG. “With this planned investment we will safeguard both the jobs of our employees and our ability to compete.”

Updating and extending production capacity

The planning provides for two options. The first option is complete rebuilding of the whole facility in Roth’s “An der Lände” industrial area. The alternative is to rebuild part of the production in the industrial area and to update the remaining plant structure in the city centre. The expansion of production space as well as optimisation of work and logistics processes achieved in both cases would provide an ideal setting for production that points the way to the future.

With respect to the product range, the project comprises relocation of the wire and strand production as well as extension of the capacity at the Roth facility to make products with greater added value for the automotive and automation markets.

Support from IG Metall and the City of Roth

Both the IG Metall trade union and the City of Roth support the plans for the “factory of the future”. “The supplementary pay scale agreement that Leoni and IG Metall have signed provides for extension of the employees’ working hours to 38 a week for a period of 6 years. In return the Company will invest in buildings, infrastructure as well as machinery and equipment,” says Johann Horn, authorised signatory of IG Metall’s administrative office in Schwabach.

Richard Erdmann, the mayor of the City of Roth, also welcomes the extension and updating of production capacity that further guarantees Leoni’s commitment to the location. “This bold and promising decision will safeguard the jobs at the largest private sector employer in Roth. Tradition and progress – two words that describe both Leoni and the City of Roth.”
